FOURTEEN
Haley sighed when she saw another car already parked in Ricardo Zepedaâs driveway as she pulled up to the address Tracy Lamb had given her. She wondered how long the police chiefâs wife had been camped out on the property, waiting. Given her obsession with seeing her boyfriend set free, she could have arrived immediately after their garden-store encounter yesterday.
Tracy scrambled out of her car before Haley could change her mind and reverse course. Haley groaned as she pushed the car into park and slipped off her seat belt. She hoped after today Tracy would let the issue of Zepedaâs innocence go, or at least redirect her efforts to someone who could actually help her. Instead, she feared this home visit would backfire, inspiring Tracy to view her as an easy target for her conspiracy theories.
But it was too late to back out now.
Tracy rushed up to Haleyâs car, opening the door before Haley could lock herself inside and refuse to come out. âThank you so much for coming. You have no idea what this means to me.â
Haley tried but failed to muster up a smile. âLetâs just get this over with.â
Her grumbling did nothing to dampen Tracyâs spirits. The woman practically sprinted up the driveway, her red curls fanning behind her like a superheroâs cape. By the time Haley caught up with her, she was already fitting a key into the lock.
Something stirred in Haleyâs stomach. If Zepeda were overseeing a drug operation, would he entrust a house key to the police chiefâs wife?
Haley pushed the thought aside as Tracy swung the door open. Zepeda might not even run the drug ring from home, she reminded herself. Maybe he maintained a facility somewhere else. And Zepeda certainly had no reason to expect his key to end up in Victor Lambâs possession. Given that Zepeda and Tracy had been engaged in their affair for years, theyâd probably just grown complacent and exchanged keys as a matter of convenience.
âDoes Zepeda have a key to your house too?â Haley asked.
Tracy darted her a look. âNo. But Iâm not single either.â
Haley refrained from making a sarcastic comment as she stepped inside. âHow often do you come here?â
Tracy dipped her head down. Just when Haley figured she wasnât going to answer, she said, âAs often as I can.â
That surprised Haley. She would have pegged the chiefâs wife as more the type to rent a hotel room for her trysts. As a love nest, Zepedaâs small, rundown house looked better suited for beady-eyed, four-legged creatures.
Maybe love really was blind.
Haley stepped farther into the room, her heart pounding as the implications of her agreeing to this visit sank in. She might currently be standing in the living area of one of the people responsible for Michaelâs death. Although sheâd never envisioned being escorted into one of the drug dealersâ houses, she used to daydream about storming into them on her own, confronting the occupants head-on after catching them doing laundry or cleaning or cooking. For some reason, the criminals of her dreams were always fairly domestic.
